After Needle Biopsy

Activity Guidelines

For the rest of the day:

  • Go home and rest quietly.

  • Do not drive or use machinery or appliances.

  • Eat a normal diet.

  • Do not drink alcohol if you received medicine for pain or sedation.

  • Do not lift more than 10 pounds for 2 days.

Care of Your Biopsy Site

  • Look at the site daily.

  • Keep it clean and dry to prevent infection.

  • You can shower 24 hours after your biopsy.

  • Cover with a Band-Aid or dressing for 1 day.

What is Normal at the Site?

(The following may or may not happen.)

 Any biopsy

-

The site may be somewhat tender.  Try acetaminophen (Tylenol).  Do not take more than a total of 2400 mg in 24 hours.

Liver biopsy

-

You might feel pain in either shoulder.

Lung biopsy

-

You may cough up a small amount of blood.

Kidney biopsy

-

You may see a small amount of blood in your urine.

Thyroid biopsy

-

 Your throat may be sore.  Try throat lozenges for relief.

  
What is not Normal? 

Call Interventional Radiology right away if:

  • You have bleeding that does not stop.

  • There is swelling or a lump at the biopsy site.

  • Your pain does not get better with Tylenol.

  • You feel faint or weak.

  • It is hard for you to breath.

  • Your heart rate is fast and you are sweating for no reason.

  • You have signs of an infection, such as fever, chills, redness or tenderness at the site, or the site feels warm to the touch.
