How to Care for Yourself at Home

 

Stay home and away from others except to get medical care if you have COVID-19.

What to do next?

You need to follow the guidelines below unless told otherwise by your state health department.

  • Stay home for 5 days.
  • If you have a fever, continue to stay home until your fever resolves.
  • If you have no symptoms or your symptoms are resolving after 5 days, you can leave your house.
  • Continue to wear a mask around others for 5 additional days.
  • We encourage you to wear a mask in public even after this 10 day period.

 

How do you manage a fever?

  • Use Tylenol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen to treat your fever. Follow the directions on the label.
  • Dress in light clothing. This will help you lose extra body heat through your skin.
  • Drink plenty of fluids. This includes water, juice, clear sodas, ginger ale or lemonade.
  • A fever is a normal reaction that helps your body fight infections.

 

What should members of your household do?

If vaccination status is one of the below

Follow the below

  • Have been boosted.
    OR
  • Completed the primary series of Pfizer or Moderna vaccine within the last 6 months.
  • OR
    Completed the primary series of J&J vaccine within the last 2 months.
  • Wear a mask around others for 10 days.

 

  • Test on day 5, if possible.

 

 

If not boosted, not fully vaccinated OR not vaccinated

Follow the below

  • Completed the primary series of Pfizer or Moderna vaccine over 6 months ago and are not boosted.
    OR
  • Completed the primary series of J&J over 2 months ago and are not boosted.
    OR
  • Are not vaccinated.
  • Stay home for 5 days. After that continue to wear a mask around others for 5 additional days.

 

  • If you can’t quarantine, you must wear a mask for 10 days.

 

  • Test on day 5, if possible.

 

 

General Information

Please follow these general guidelines to help prevent the spread of infections.

  • Stay at home until you have no fever for 24 hours with no fever-lowering medicine.
  • Separate yourself from other people in your home. Stay in a specific room and away from other people.
  • Cover your cough and sneezes.
  • Clean your hands often. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. You may also use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
  • Try not to share personal household items.
  • Clean and disinfect objects and surfaces every day that are touched often.
  • Do not go back to work until your symptoms are completely gone if you work with people who have a weak immune system. Your employer may also want to make sure it’s okay for you go back to work.

 

Contact your doctor’s office if:

  • Your symptoms get worse.
  • You have new symptoms.
  • You have any questions.

  

Go to the Emergency Room if you:

  • Have a hard time breathing.
  • Are very dehydrated.
  • Cannot keep fluids down (severe vomiting or diarrhea).
  • Are confused.
  • Feel weak.
